The Penny Post: A Nerdy Holiday with a Powerful Money Lesson

Hi Reader!

What is your favorite holiday? Is it the sparkly joy of Christmas? The summer vibes of July 4th? The creativity and mystery of Halloween?

Mine is Pi Day.

March 14th or 3.14 celebrates the day that matches the mathematical constant pi: the relationship between a circle’s circumference (its outer edge) and its diameter (its width). The delightful quirk that pi, a circle equation, sounds like pie, a circular food, creates a holiday that celebrates math, food, and puns - what could be better!

Ok, maybe this doesn’t get you quite as excited as me. But that’s exactly thepoint. We all light up over different things. We find joy in different experiences. You may see others spending money on exotic travel or upscale restaurants. Others always seem to have a new outfit or the latest tech. But just because someone else has made it a priority doesn’t mean it needs to be one for you.

Your joy makes you uniquely you.

When your spending aligns with what genuinely excites and fulfills you, money feels lighter. More intentional. Less like comparison and more like choice.

A budget isn’t about cutting out joy—it’s about funding the right kind of joy.

So embrace what makes you happy, even if it’s quirky, nerdy, simple, or different from what everyone else is doing. (Maybe especially then.) Life gets sweeter when your time and money reflect who you really are.

In my next newsletter, I’ll share a fun way to help you discover what truly brings you joy. And on March 14th, celebrate something round—preferably with whipped cream.

Remember, small change adds up. Step by step and penny by penny, we’re building a better life. Have a shiny day!

Here's a question: Do you charge purchases today knowing you'll pay them off with your next paycheck? It feels harmless enough, right? That's called credit card float. And while it can feel as breezy as a lazy river ride, it may be hiding some murky waters beneath the surface. When you pay for something...

Hi Reader! Zero-Based Budgeting. 50/30/20 Rule. 70/20/10 Rule. Cash Stuffing. Pay-Yourself-First. Anti-Budget. No-Spend Challenge. Mindful Spending. There are so many buzzwords and trendy opinions around how to manage your money. But how do you choose? Which one is actually right for you? Finding the right system can feel a little like Goldilocks trying to find the right bed. Not every approach fits just right. It takes time to get comfortable and start seeing results. But once you find a...

Hi Reader! Are you getting a tax refund this year? Refunds can feel like a gift from above (pennies from heaven!), and they generate a lot of excitement. But without a little planning, that excitement can work against you. A windfall, whether it is a refund, a bonus, or a gift, has a way of sparking big dreams. We start mentally spending it the moment we hear it's coming: pay down debt, build up savings, finally make that purchase we've been putting off, book that vacation. And honestly? That...
